Twenty scholars from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University are preparing for civilian careers in the Department of Defense as part of the Defense Civilian Training Corps, a pilot program AIRC is guiding. “I believe that the DCTC program will provide me the necessary tools to succeed in my area of study and grow in professional development, as I am able to learn from leaders working within the United States government,” said Hizikiel, a business information technology major.

Following a joint online kickoff for all four universities of the Defense Civilian Training Corps, the Department of Defense website published an article highlighting AIRC’s role in designing and guiding the pilot program. “Congress saw the opportunity to create a strong partnership between the department and academia to address the need to strengthen and build a DoD talent pipeline for critical skills needed in the acquisition workforce,” said AIRC Fellow Karen Thornton.

The program director for Purdue’s cohort in the Defense Civilian Training Corps illustrated the culture supporting scholars in the pilot program guided by AIRC: “We use the phrase ‘culture of care’ in DCTC to describe the sense of meaning and connection we are developing among our scholars,” said Ken Callahan. “This culture includes a deep sense of meaning and purpose in national defense work and a strong connection with others they work with.”
